A New Life Begins in the USA

In June 2001, Raj and Mona arrived in the United States from India with their 1-year-old daughter, ready to build a new life. Raj brought decades of experience running a cabinet hardware plant, while Mona had been a homemaker. They initially aimed to expand the cabinet business but soon found themselves pursuing a different dream.

The Birth of Bollywood Masala

In 2003, Raj and Mona opened Curry of India in St. Mary’s County, learning the restaurant business from scratch. They catered for Indian families across the DC area, building trust and a loyal following. After a failed partnership forced Curry of India to close, they persevered and, in 2008, returned stronger—opening Bollywood Masala at the same location to share their refined, authentic North Indian cuisine with the community.

When life brought challenges, Raj and Mona turned to what they loved most—cooking. Inspired by traditional techniques learned from their mothers, they created the foundation for Bollywood Masala. Raj’s roots in Uttar Pradesh and Mona’s Punjabi heritage blend together in every dish, uniting aromatic spices with bold flavors. Today, Bollywood Masala reflects their passion, heritage, and shared culinary dream.
